M3D Systems Ideal for Front Side Metallization of Crystalline PV Cells

Albuquerque, New Mexico, 12 June 2008: Optomec announced today that Stephen Barnes, Advanced R&D Engineer, will give a presentation on M3D Aerosol Jet deposition technology at the IdTechEx Photovoltaics: Beyond Conventional Silicon conference next week. Mr. Barnes will provide an overview of M3D systems and will discuss the benefits of this breakthrough technology as a solution for high volume printing of collector lines on solar cells. The M3D system is a fine feature, non-contact printed electronics solution for solar cell manufacturers that can print narrower lines with higher yields. The conference will be held June 17 and 18 at the Hyatt Regency Tech Center in Denver, Colorado.

Optomec’s M3D system is a printing platform used in the development of next generation devices such as high density circuitry for photovoltaic cells, fuel cells, printable electronics, and more. The M3D Aerosol Jet is a Direct Write process that first aerosolizes conductive photovoltaic inks or pastes and then forms an aerodynamically focused droplet stream of the material. This Direct Write capability eliminates the need for screens or stencils required by traditional contact deposition processes while also enabling much finer feature sizes. In addition to the wide variety of materials and substrates supported and the finer feature sizes, the additive process employed by M3D reduces environmental impact by minimizing the waste and chemicals that are part of more traditional manufacturing processes.

Optomec is the world-leading provider of additive manufacturing systems for high-performance applications in the Electronics, Biomedical, and Aerospace & Defense markets. These systems utilize Optomec’s proprietary M3D aerosol-jetting technology and LENS powder-metal fabrication technology. The company has a global customer base of industry-leading manufacturers.
